Electrical Power tools

WHAT IS MAINS POWER/TOOLS.

Mains electricity is the general-purpose alternating-current electric power supply. In New Zealand, the Mains voltage is 230V. Which is an a.c. (Alternate Current) This means that the current is constantly changing direction. Mains powered tools are the tools that can only be used Mains power

THREE MAINS POWER TOOLS I HAVE USED.

Welder
Drill
Grinder

TASKS I HAVE USED THESE TOOLS FOR.

Welder- Connecting two different pieces of metal material together for various projects (eg toolmakers clamp)
Drill- Making a various range of holes in different diameters (measured in mm). (eg weather vane drilling holes for the rivets to go into)
Grinder- I have used this tool when manufacturing my toolmakers clamp to grind down my weld to look clean and sit flush with the rest of the surfaces .

WHAT IS “RCD”

Why is it important?

RCD stands for Residual Current Device. It is a device that is designed to prevent any fatal electric shocks if you touch anything that might be live. An RCD will most likely be used in the workplace, or at home. RCD eclectic cables have a switch in them that help minimise the risk of getting any harm from electrical hazards.

WHAT IS DOUBLE INSULATION?

Appliances and tools of this type are called "double insulated". They have two levels of insulating materials between the electrical parts of the appliance and any parts on the outside that you touch. ... Double insulation construction of appliances and tools allows the manufacturer to produce a lower-cost product. Double insulating also helps make a heavier duty cord so they cannot be damaged as easily as other cables.

EXTENSION CORDS.

Why are extension cords a safety hazard?

If the extension cord is covered, heat is unable to be realised and could combust resulting in a fire. You should always make sure extension cords are visible and if at all possible, not running across highly trafficked areas. They can be a potenetial trip hazard for people walking through the area.
PPE.
No matter what you're doing you should always wear appropriate PPE to protect you from any hazards presented by power tools, such as Dust and Debris. PPE such as goggles, dust masks, gloves, hard hats, and safety boots should be worn where appropriate.

Pneumatic Tools and Power

Image result for air compressor to tool diagram

diagram of how a compressor works/ creates air into usable pneumatic power via different tools

WHAT IS A PNEUMATIC SYSTEM?

A pneumatic system is a system that uses variable pressures of compressed air to control different tools/attachments to use during your required tasks. The compressed air comes from a device called an Air Compressor.

WHAT IS AN AIR COMPRESSOR?

An air compressor creates and supplies all the power for all the equipment in a pneumatic system. The rate the compressor can deliver air is measured in cubic feet per minute. There are multiple different types and sizes of compressors. Piston or reciprocating, rotary screw compressor, rotary sliding vane compressors. centrifugal compressors.

SAFETY AROUND COMPRESSED AIR.

Compressed air has the potential to cause serious and permanent injuries. the compressed air will cause minor injuries if it breaks through your or anyone else's skin. if the air gets into your bloodstream there is potential that it will travel to your heart and brain and cause permanent damage.

To avoid any injuries while using compressed air make sure all hoses and fittings are securely fitted to the apparatuses that are being used. also, you should never spray others or yourself down with the compressed air as this will cause injuries,

PPE:

Safety is a huge part of any workplace environment so when using compressed air you should always use the correct PPE for what you're doing. for example, when using a dust-off gun you should always use a full face shield to protect your eyes from any debris that will be flying around. One hundred percent of the time when using any power tools you should be using ear defenders and safety glasses to protect you from noise and debris.
